There are many great things in Scotland including educational institutes. Scotland is home to some of the oldest universities in the world and some of the most respected. The medical schools are attracting students from all over the world. Admissions to these schools are competitive. Here is a list of some of the best medical schools in Scotland.

Scotland Medical Schools

Disclaimer: All of this information was verified on the university website in the second week of November in 2018. It is related to undergraduate coursework. This and admissions are subject to change. Please confirm all of the information before applying.

University of Aberdeen

This school is known for its intense courses and research. The courses often last five years and take an integrated approach. Student participation is required.

Structure of Courses

Year 1 and 2

The students will learn about the body and the disease processes and how they relate to medicine. They will attend clinics weekly and shadow medical professionals in the hospital.

Year 3

The student will look at the organ systems and will study medical humanities.

Year 4

Students will take nine, 5-week clinical experiences in different areas.

Year 5

The student will attend their areas of specialization.

After year 3 or 4 students may have a BSc degree in Medical Science or Medical Humanities.

University of Dundee

This school is located at Ninewells Hospital. It is known for cancer research, surgery, the development of new drugs, and medical education. Students attend smaller cohorts so they can engage in more teaching and learning activities.

Years 1 to 3

Students will learn the organ systems and will follow modules.

Years 4 and 5

Students will be placed in different clinical settings.

Students can select from anatomy, cardiovascular medicine, forensic medicine, and they can also look at international health.

University of Edinburgh

This school was opened in 1726 and is one of the oldest schools in the world. It is also one of the top 50 schools in the world.

Course Structure

This program lasts for 6 years and students will attend lectures, interactive learning, lab work, and clinical settings.

Years 1 and 2

Students will study biomedical science, anatomy, and other areas related to science and medicine.

Year 3

Students will begin a research-based program. They can look at biochemistry, psychology, neuroscience, and pharmacology.

Year 4

Students will study in a clinical setting and various placements.

Year 5

A student will study their specialty while completing a research-based project.

Year 6

Students will develop practical skills and general knowledge of medicine

University of Glasgow

This school offers a great academic environment. Students will get clinical experience and they will have the chance to study at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital which has state of the art equipment and a teaching lab.

This school was ranked second in the United Kingdom.

Course Structure

The courses include small group settings, problem-based courses, and clinical settings.

Year 1 and 2

A student will learn a systematic approach to medicine and also some communication skills that will help in this field.

Years 3 to 5

Students will attend five, 10-week clinical experiences.

This school offers a one year intercalated BSc program with 20 options to select from. This can be taken years 3 or 4.

University of St. Andrews

Students have the option to graduate after 3 years with a BSc before they complete the remainder of their training to become a doctor.

Course Structure

There is a strong clinical component to this work. There is a 6 years program where clinical studies are mixed with other types of learning activities.

Year 1

A student will take science classes and classes to understand the body and diseases.

Year 2

Students will learn the normal functioning of body systems and add to the material they previously learned.

Year 3

This year has 3 terms. They will look at psychological systems, student research projects, and developing clinical skills.

There is no minimum score. Applicants are reviewed upon their academic history, nonacademic requirements, and then these scores.

University of Glasgow

There is no minimum score. This test will be considered with the rest of the application and requirements.

University of St Andrewes

There is no cut off score. Students that meet the academic requirements and then ranked on the UCAT scores. Those that are in the top 400 will be granted an interview for admissions. The lowest applicant in 2018 sored 2400.
