For the first time, the Institute for Translational Medicine & Therapeutics (ITMAT) Meeting will be held in Europe at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) conference centre on Friday, 17 March 2017.

The theme of the meeting is ‘Big Data & the Development of New Medicines’. The organisers look forward to welcoming attendees from the UK and Europe, both early and established researchers, from across science and medicine. The one-day programme will bring together a faculty of internationally-recognised speakers, thanks to support from the British Pharmacological Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

ITMAT is based at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, is directed by Professor Garret FitzGeralnd. ITMAT was the first institute for translational medicine in the world. It supports work at the interface of basic and clinical research, focusing on developing new and safer medicines.

Objective

This meeting aims to address topics directly relevant to translational science and the use of big data in the development of new medicines.

Aims

  • To understand the role of infrastructure in the utilisation of big data
  • Appreciate the role of proteomics in the development of new medicines
  • Understand the role of biobanks as tools in genetic-epidemiological research
  • To discuss translational science in an academic medical centre and in a company
  • Understand the role of immunomodulation in cardiovascular disease and cancer
  • Appreciate the roles of the environment, diet and the microbiome in health & disease
